10:47 am - Bday
Today is my 54th birthday.

Thanks to everyone for helping make my weekend of parties a success.

After the grand party in Tumwater on Friday night, I attended the Civil War reenactment in Port Gamble on Saturday followed by dinner with some of my Kitsap friends in Silverdale. Sunday spent a quieter day but did get out to see "Up" which I highly recommend. Monday was a day of homey stuff with a softball game in the evening. My batting average dropped to .824 but we also got our first double play (I'm first baseman).

Tonight is dinner out and dancing with my lovely partner, Kathy. Tomorrow more softball. Thursday archery. Friday ballroom dancing again. Saturday River's Bend tourney & war so I can get my fight on. By next Sunday I'm gonna need a day of recovery.

I b
elieve in birthday seasons rather than just days!

May everyone's birthdays this year be blessed.

3:09 pm - Birthday parties!
Two chances to party!

This Friday (June 19th) starting about 7PM at my home in Tumwater (contact me if you need directions). General mischief and mayhem.

This Saturday (June 20th) starting about 5PM at the Azteca restaurant in Silverdale. A chance to gather with my friends from Dragon's Laire and thereabouts!

Hope to have a chance to share tequila with you one or both nights!

Greetings,

Two chances to party coming up this month to celebrate my birthday. I hope you can join me for one of them.

Friday, June 19th, 7PM at my home in Tumwater. Contact me if you need directions. Parking will be limited but the library lot isn't far. Feel free to bring goodies to eat and drink.

Saturday, June 20th, probably around 5PM somewhere in Kitsap County. I'm going to be in Port Gamble during the afternoon and on the way back home would like to stop for dinner in the Bremerton area and meet up with all my friends there. Any suggestions about a good place to meet for dinner? El Sombrero in Port Orchard has killer Sangrai...

RSVP if you can so I can get a head count, but if you decide at the last minute to drop by, feel free. The more the merrier!

joyfully,

Rich / Richard

7:41 am - Long weekends
What a great and busy weekend it was!

Friday I went ballroom dancing in Centralia. Needed to brush up on my waltz and fotxtrot in preparation for an upcoming
Somewhere in Time formal event set in 1912. Got the white tie and tux rented. Now if I can just manage to dance.

Saturday I went to a great feast in
Fire Mountain Keep. Played retinue for Baron Godric and Baroness Kara. Did a brief demo of SCA fighting for some new folks. The food was most excellent!

Sunday I hosted an
Oscar party for half a dozen friends. We mostly agreed on the choices made by the Academy (I'm sure they'll be pleased) and really liked the the new method of using 5 presenters, one for each nominee, on the major awards.

Monday my buddy Wes and I went to Seattle for dinner and to hear
Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson speak about Pluto and astronomy and space. He's very entertaining and informative.

Next weekend is darn near as busy.

I've been discovering several new hobbies and groups of late and found that my interest in cool clothes and things has become broader than just the SCA.

10:04 am - Lewis County

Made it from Grand Mound where I-5 is closed down old 99 to Centralia near mile 81 but road to Chehalus closed due to flooding so I can't get over to Jackson Highway

Talking to locals over coffee again. Rumor is I-5 will open before I could get around.

9:03 am - Travel

At Ground Mound. 507 still closed at Tenino. Locals here say backroads can get into Centralia to Jackson which is open but it's so convoluted no one will give me exact directions. After coffee I'm going to start south on 99 and wander.

National guard blocking on ramp to I-5 at 88. Word us they may open at 10 or 12 or later. No one knows.

More if I get thru.

7:57 am - Twelfth Night...or not?
I *really* want to get to Twelfth Night on Friday afternoon...er...Friday evening...er...Saturday morning...but none of those options are looking very good this morning.

The WSDOT website shows I-5 currently closed for 20 miles from 88 to 68. Last I heard the alternate routes through Jackson Highway down to Highway 12 through Morton was also having problems and 101 along the coast was closed at Raymond. Lewis County's website is http://lewiscountywa.gov/Emergency/Roads.aspx and they show 6 pages of Road Closures currently and even more of Road Restrictions.

And the Weather Underground show this from 4AM today:

359 am PST Thu Jan 08 2009

The Flood Warning continues for the Chehalis river at Centralia
 * until Saturday afternoon.
 * At 3:30 am Thursday the stage was 67.8 feet.
 * Flood stage is 65.0 feet.
 * Minor flooding is occurring. The forecast is for major flooding.
 * Forecast... the river will continue to rise and crest near 74.3 feet around 10 PM Thursday. The river will fall below flood stage early Saturday morning.
 * Impact... at 73.4 feet... the Chehalis river in Lewis County will cause severe near record flooding... with deep and swift flood waters inundating residential and business areas... roads including I-5... and farms. Flooding will occur all along the river including headwaters... tributaries... and other streams within and near the Chehalis river Basin. A stage of 73.4 feet corresponds to a phase iv flood in the Lewis County flood system.

If the flood crests tonight at 10 but won't fall below flood until Saturday morning, it seems unlikely to be open anytime on Friday.

WSDOT will need to inspect the road before they open it, and so it seems probable to me that it will more likely be sometime Saturday afternoon. Then it becomes a question of heavy traffic that's been delayed for days.

I have Friday off from work (in theory to make the trip) and will try to report via iPhone if I make it through anywhere. If I don't and any of you end up stranded north of mile 88, I live just off mile 101 in Tumwater and will gladly provide food and shelter (though it may be floor space as I don't have a big place).

The question I'm pondering at the moment is that if I have to cancel Friday altogether and cannot get there until late Saturday afternoon is it worth making the trip (much as I love you guys) for less than 24 hours on site only to turn around and have to make the trip back again. I'm afraid if I'm not able to get there Friday or early Saturday that I'm not going to get there at all.

Bummer.

2:39 pm - Gramercy!
Many thanks to all my friends who contacted me today. It was nice to hear from you. Keep those texts and emails and calls coming!

And when I got home (they sent us home early from work due to the heavy snowfall today) I found that the mail had arrived!!!

Among the many joys that brighten my Xmas, a present from Laurellen, a CD mix from Carla, two Netflix DVDs, some last minute stocking stuffer gifts I'd ordered weeks ago, and half a dozen Christmas cards!

I am always humbled by the great joy that arrives in my life every day. I am especially thankful for all the kindness today.

And now with a cup of coffee (beans a gift from a colleague at work) I'm enjoying a snowy white Christmas Eve at home. Time to build a fire in the wood stove.

Wishing you and yours the happiest of Christmases and the healthiest of New Years.

9:35 am - Snow and Books
Another day snowed in at home. The library is closed today so no going in to work. Well, not totally. I live the closest so I got to walk in and lock things up and post signs and then walk back home.

So of course the rest of my day will include baking (currently cranberry/orange bread) and books and coffee.

Today's book, which I recommend highly, is Sharon Kay Penman's Devil's Brood. A historical fiction about Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine and their family.

In fact I recommend all of Penman's historical novels for anyone interested in a good read set in the time period of the 12th century.

This was my backyard LAST NIGHT! I have another 4-5 inches so far today and it's snowing again.

Enjoy if you don't have to travel anywhere. Be careful if you do.

In the midst of the holiday season I have somehow managed to avoid most of the snacks and party food. I have managed to get rid of the weight I added during Thanksgiving and continued downward toward new goals.

As of this morning I finally broke through a long standing low weight barrier that's stymied me for months and have set a new personal low weight level!

Of course this is just in time for Christmas so I can pork out on candy in my stocking... but at least my fears that I would never get below a certain point have been shattered. Wu-hu!
